Rhun ap Iorwerth MS

Ben Lake

Rhun ap Iorwerth has represented Ynys Môn (Anglesey) in the Senedd - Welsh Parliament - since August 2013, and is the Leader of Plaid Cymru since June 2023.

Before that, he was a journalist and broadcaster for nearly 20 years. After graduating in Politics and Welsh at Cardiff University, he joined the BBC in 1994. He spent a period in Westminster before returning to Wales, where he was Chief Political Correspondent, a regular correspondent for BBC Network television, as well as a presenter of many television and radio programmes in Welsh and English, from news and politics to arts and history programmes.

He grew up on Anglesey, and lives on the island with his wife Llinos and they raised their three children here.

Since his first election, Rhun has spent periods as Shadow Minister for the Economy and Transport, Health and Care, and Finance, and as a member of the corresponding committees in the Assembly and the Senedd. He has also been a member at various times of the Public Accounts, Petitions and Standards Committees, as well as one of the Senedd Commissioners.

His interests outside of politics include music, sport and travel. He coached youth at Llangefni Rugby Club for ten years and runs and cycles to keep fit. He says he composes and plays a number of instruments badly!
